We are excited to announce an innovative eye health project that seeks to prevent and treat diabetic-related ophthalmic complications and reduce the incidence of blindness linked to diabetes in Cameroon.
The project is hosted by Acha Eye Hospital Douala and is being implemented in all Acha Eye Hospitals. The project titled “Preventing irreversible blindness through early detection, management and treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy and Cataract in the Littoral Region of Cameroon” is being sponsored by CBM. It will run from the 1st of July 2023 to the 30th of June 2024 and is a pilot project.
Acha Eye Hospital has made public an ambitious plan to sensitize 151,882 persons to this sight-threatening disease and screen 25000 diabetes within a period of 1 year. Those detected to have Diabetic retinopathy will receive further tests and treatment at a very subsidized cost.
The plan was made public 26th to the 28th of July 2023, at the launching of the Project in Douala
“If we all put our hands on deck, we will be able to meet the target within these 12 months, and we need to do a lot of networking with other Health Facilities around Douala” The Health Services Secretary of the PCC, Dr Nyaah Fidelis stated.
Dr Ngounou Faustin, the Medical Director/Project Director for PCC Eye Services lauded the support from PCC Health Services; “We intend to extend this project further and in all Acha Eye Services after this pilot phase. We need the collaboration of stakeholders to accomplish this vision. We intend to train staff and acquire modern equipment for better detection and management of Diabetic Retinopathy”.
